CPA Statement

Detention and abusive treatment

Dear comrades,

We in the Communist Party of Australia are disturbed to hear about events at the Khatoon Abad Copper Mine in Iran; the detention and abusive treatment of 28 trade unionists seeking to defend workers’ rights to jobs, decent incomes and safe working conditions. While the unionists have now all been released due to the organisation of Iranian workers and international pressure, news of this sort from Iran remains all too common. It draws attention to the broader struggle of the workers and other exploited people of Iran for a secular, democratic system in their country and the right to choose another path of development without dictatorship from religious authorities or meddling from imperialist powers, most notably the United States. We send our warmest working class solidarity with this struggle.

In socialism,

Bob Briton
General Secretary,
Communist Party of Australia
