Obituary

Bill Pomeroy

Readers will be interested, though saddened, to learn of the death of William "Bill" Pomeroy, a great revolutionary. Bill died in his 90s, in a nursing home in London. With his wife, Celia Mariano, Bill — an American Communist who had fought the Japanese in the Philippines as a member of the US Air Force — later fought with the HUKS (military arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines) against the oppressive government and landowners, and American counter-insurgency forces in the 1940s and 50s. They served 10 years in prison after being captured.

Exiled to the UK after their death sentences were commuted, Bill and Celia waged war against imperialism and neo-colonialism by the pen.

Bill’s books include Guerrilla Warfare and Marxism; Guerrilla and Counter-Guerrilla Warfare; American Neo-Colonialism; Apartheid, Imperialism and African Freedom; many books on the American colonisation of the Philippines; and The Forest, a moving account of life with Celia in the forests with the HUKS.

He was a true and deeply committed revolutionary, as well as a personally inspirational human. His struggle, and ours, continues.
