Leonard Weinglass

The Communist Party of Australia wishes to express its sadness at the passing of the great US defence lawyer, Leonard Weinglass. To the very end of his life, this brave attorney was working to defend the victims of injustice in his country from further persecution within the legal system.

His final mighty efforts were devoted to the cause of freedom for the Cuban Five anti-terrorists now held in US penitentiaries. Over the decades he took up the cause of many prominent figures that the US establishment wished to see crushed, including Angela Davis, Pentagon Papers defendant Daniel Ellsberg, the Black Panthers’ Bobby Seale and Mumia Abu-Jamal.

His perseverance, vision and astounding eloquence were weapons for the defence of the oppressed. He will be sadly missed but we note the words of one of the Cuban Five, Antonio Guerrero, who said in his homage: “Weinglass was a friend who always led me to think of Marti’s words when he said: ‘…Death is not true when the work of life has been properly done...’ and ‘Even dead, some men still give light at sunrise’.”
