Prison officers walk in riot threat warning

British prison officers have warned that the rising jail population and budget cuts will lead to more riots and assaults.

The warning came after 100 prison staff protested outside Nottingham Prison over the increasing number of assaults by inmates.

The staff at the category B prison, which holds more than 500 inmates, held a meeting outside the jail while the prisoners were locked up over lunch to highlight concerns over a series of attacks.

Prison Officer Association general secretary Steve Gillan said: “There have been severe assaults on staff and we’re saying that it’s totally unacceptable.

“There are real problems with the Crown Prosecution Service not prosecuting cases of assault on prison officers and we’re saying, ‘enough is enough’.

“There are on average 2,800 reported assaults every year for the last five years on prison officers and in many of those cases the Crown Prosecution Service has refused to prosecute, stating it not to be in the public interest, simply because the prisoner is already serving a sentence.”
