Once in a decade birthday party

The CPA General Secretary’s once in a decade 70th birthday party was celebrated at the Gaelic Club in Sydney on October 28.

Over 100 guests from the Communist Party, peace and environmental groups and other peoples’ movements, family and friends were treated to a wonderful event, including Filipino dancing and a poem to Hannah by Professor Stuart Rees of the Sydney Peace Foundation.

One party goer exclaimed that she felt she “was in the heart of Sydney”.

Hannah’s career from her childhood, to university in London, research in Nigeria, teaching and then research in the German Democratic Republic and finally to Australia was covered in a few talks.

The birthday party raised almost $1,200 for the Guardian Press Fund and a similar amount for the Anti-Bases campaign.

The CPA thanks everyone who came, the more than 50 people who sent apologies and everyone who made a donation.
