“A lot of pain”

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera complained that he was being forced to pull out of hosting two major international summits today as he instead focuses on “re-establishing public order.”

He said the decision to drop a December trade summit and next month’s COP25 United Nations climate change conference amid continuing anti-government protests “caused him a lot of pain.”

The billionaire is facing the biggest wave of unrest seen in Chile for decades, with at least one million demonstrators taking to the streets of the capital Santiago over the weekend.

Anger has risen over austerity measures imposed at the behest of the International Monetary Fund, leaving Pinera fighting for his political life.

Scores of people have been killed and the Chilean armed forces have been mobilised, with military curfews and a government-declared state of emergency evoking memories of General Augusto Pinochet’s 1973-1990 dictatorship.

The songs of murdered Chilean folk singer Victor Jara have once again become the soundtrack as protesters demand a peaceful revolution and Pinera’s resignation.

A UN spokesperson said today that the world body was “exploring alternative hosting options” for the climate conference.
