Issue #1905      March 2, 2020

Australian theory and history

This week we have three articles in our Australian theory and history section. In the theory section, we have an essay by L L Sharkey, edited by L Harry Gould, on the “White Australia” policy. The essay is a combination of a couple of articles written in 1947-48. Our party’s views have evolved in many respects since the 1940s but what these writings highlight is how forward-thinking many of those in the Australian Communist movement were about policies that were explicitly racist.

In the history section are two articles; first, a retort by then-member of the Central Executive of the Communist Party, R Dixon, over comments Prime Minister Billy Hughes made about the party in 1940. Second, a clarification on the report on the communist bashing in Mudgee in 1940.
