Issue #1913      May 4, 2020

This Week ...

Last Friday was May Day, an important day where we celebrate the hard fight our trade unionist forefathers fought for the rights of Australia's working class. While as communists we believe that involvement in our trade unions is important to organising the working class, we also believe that the working class should join on their own volition. It is our duty to educate those who don't yet understand the meaning of solidarity, to try and awaken class-conscious. It is only in this way that we will have a strong, militant working-class ready to fight at all times. It is on these principles that the two theory articles in our theory and history section stand, at a time when compulsory trade union membership was on the table.

An equally important day is the defeat of fascism in Europe, 7th May 1945. Our paper at the time and since has covered and revisited the remarkable and brave efforts of the Red Army who, without their help, the defeat of fascism may have never occurred. However, our party also noted the efforts of many young, brave Australian soldiers who helped defeat European fascism. One such event was the Siege of Tobruk, which is recounted here.
