Congratulations to all workers taking action this May Day, the international day of working class struggle and solidarity. Actions of workers on the streets, taking industrial action, organising on the job and fighting in our communities is what makes change in society. All our actions are important. It is people, united in struggle that make change, and May Day is an important part of that struggle. Working class struggle does not stop at a single day of action; it must become a consistent push by the working class for justice and change, away from the brutal capitalist system. It is a struggle for the rights of all people to eradicate exploitation and profit as the basis of the way our society works.

The cost of living is out of control. Workers are getting robbed through the exploitation of our labour and persistent attacks by employers on workers’ wages, rights, and conditions. We’re robbed at home with massive price gouging and profiteering. Small businesses and farmers are being exploited.

All these issues are matters for working class struggle, for union struggle and community actions. At the heart of all these issues is private ownership. If we develop public enterprises, public housing, and publicly owned and controlled supermarkets, many of these problems could be resolved. It is the pursuit of profits that is causing working class pain. Bosses, banks, landlords and supermarkets are all out for their own gain and do not have the interests of the people in mind.

It needs working class struggle with solidarity across the union movement and the broader working class to address the cost of living crisis. Fighting capitalist social forces and governments is incredibly important if we want to make change. So is building the largest mass organisations of the working class, our trade unions. Class struggle and organising is the way forward!

  • Join your Union and organise for immediate cost of living claims
  • Join the CPA to extend that view to changing the whole system and for the building of socialism.

The Communist Party of Australia demands the right to strike. The right to strike is a critical reform. The CPA supports ongoing campaigning to make this demand a reality. The Party supports workers whenever they take action, but the complex web of anti-union laws put in place by Labor and Liberal governments is a huge barrier to union struggle and the fight for working class rights, wages, and conditions, let alone political demands. Striking is a particularly effective form of class struggle, and workers should not have unfair obstacles put in their way when pushing back against the rampant exploitation of the employing class. Strikes can help us win!

Peace is a working class issue, so it’s union business. Whenever there is a war anywhere, it is the working people who bear the brunt of costs and casualties. The Albanese government’s support for the genocide and the atrocities Israel is committing against the people of Palestine is unspeakable and must be condemned.

In the maelstrom of news surrounding the Palestinian genocide, it’s easy to forget fundamentals such as Western complicity. The US government, has been funding Israel’s military. Israel would not be able to commit genocide without help from the United States and its Western allies. Australia must be independent and not fall in line with US pressure. For 75 years Palestine has been unjustly occupied by the terrorist settler state of Israel. The CPA stands with the Palestinian people and calls for a permanent ceasefire and the immediate creation of an independent Palestinian state.

While workers struggle with cost of living and our housing, health, education and social services are in crisis; spending $380 billion on war is unbelievably unprincipled. The CPA opposes AUKUS and calls for a reduction in military spending and the diversion of those funds into socially useful purposes including health, education, social services, renewable energy and other measures to tackle the climate crisis which is a priority for the future of humanity.

The Communist Party of Australia believes there is a way to overcome Australia’s economic and social problems. To do this,  it is necessary to change the direction of politics in Australia and, eventually, to replace the capitalist system with a socialist one. The Communist Party is a party of activists who work in trade unions, peace and environmental groups, solidarity organisations and a variety of other community movements as well as running campaigns in the name of the Communist Party. Members of the CPA work to eliminate unemployment, poverty, injustice, homelessness, racism and war. These problems arise from the domination of our society by huge profit-hungry private corporations. It does not have to be this way. We are working for an independent, prosperous, and safe Australia.
