A recent poll by analytics firm YouGov has found that more people in the US disapprove than approve of the US blocking oil shipments to Cuba. The poll shows that 46% of people in the US disapprove of Trump’s oil blockade on Cuba, while 28% approve and 27% are unsure.

The survey also indicates that most people in the US oppose sanctions on Cuba.

In addition, despite the Trump administration’s far-fetched claim that Cuba represents a threat to US national security, two-thirds of those polled believe Cuba poses only a minor threat or no threat at all. Among those polled, countries viewed as more threatening than Cuba include Russia, Iran, North Korea, and even Mexico.

One aspect of US policy towards Cuba that did find broad support was good diplomatic relations. A majority (61%) of US residents polled approved of official diplomatic relations with Cuba with only  10% disapproving. Majorities of Democrats (69%), Independents (58%), and Republicans (57%) approved of having diplomatic relations. Only a small minority (16%) of Republicans were against US-Cuba diplomatic relations.

The US and Cuba have had official diplomatic relations since the US embassy in Havana and Cuban embassy in Washington opened in 2015.
