Che Guevara, a reading guide

  • The Guardian
  • Issue #2194
Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara

Che Guevara is an iconic and inspiring figure. He was also a dedicated revolutionary figure who thought deeply about the liberation struggles he took part in. The last issue of the Guardian highlighted his political career and contributions to the Cuban revolution and to liberation movements worldwide (see ‘Che Guevara at 98,’ Guardian #2193). This week, we present a short reading guide for anyone wanting to read the man himself.

Political and Economic Writings

Che Guevara Reader – Speeches, essays, and letters covering revolution, socialism, and internationalism. Highly recommended and very relevant to the ongoing question of internationalism.

Critical Notes on Political Economy  – Guevara’s critique of Soviet-style economics and reflections on socialist development. Highly recommended, very interesting material on economic questions still relevant today.

Guerrilla Warfare – His most influential work on revolutionary strategy and guerrilla warfare.

Che Guevara Speaks – A collection of major speeches and essays.

Cuban Revolution

Episodes of the Cuban Revolutionary War – Firsthand account of the guerrilla struggle against the Batista government.

Memoirs and Diaries

The Motorcycle Diaries – His account of a 1952 journey across Latin America that shaped his political outlook. Popular because of the romantic ‘on the road’ aspect, well worth reading for the politics as well.

Back on the Road – Diary of a later Latin American trip before the Cuban Revolution.

Congo Diary – His reflections on the failed revolutionary mission in Africa.

The Bolivian Diary – Notes from his last guerrilla campaign in Bolivia before his death.
