ACFS-SA action
South Australia
The South Australian branch of the ACFS launched its ‘from Australia to Cuba with Love’ campaign on the 4 July. On 10 July, the society organised a walk in Port Adelaide as part of the campaign and invited unions. The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) answered the call.
After the walk, two members spoke with Australia’s Minister for Health Mark Butler MP and asked why Australia abstained at a recent UN vote on Cuba. We will follow this up by a letter focusing on the Cuban health system crisis.
On 11 July, we had a 30 minute segment on Radio Adelaide to talk about the situation in Cuba.
On 31 July, the society walked to Penny Wong’s office to hand deliver a letter focusing on the next vote in UN.
Naarm/Melbourne
On 26 July, the ACFS Melbourne Branch commemorated the Moncado Barracks attack with a screening of the Abby Martin/Matt Belem film Cuba After Castro, a revealing series of interviews with Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel. Music was provided, and the audience heard from members of the Southern Cross and May Day solidarity Brigades. Attendees were urged to consider signing up for the next Southern Cross Brigade in 2027. Branch President Maree Dellora gave a speech condemning the Trump administration’s oil blockade as an act of illegal collective punishment.
