The mayor of Melbourne’s Hume City Council, Carly Moore, has put out a statement calling on the Australian Services Union to end industrial action and “focus on reaching an agreement through the bargaining process.”
Moore also said that Hume was negotiating in good faith “and demonstrated its commitment to employees by providing a 2.5% pay increase in November 2025.”
What Moore’s statement did not mention, but the ASU shared on their social media accounts, is that Moore herself received a 10.6% payrise last year. Speaking of “good faith,” the council is docking workers’ pay by 11.5% as a punishment for taking lawful industrial action.
The union says that the council would obviously prefer to give tens of thousands to lawyers and management instead of to the people who keep the council running.
