In a recent meeting with Venezuelan Chargé d’affaires, His Excellency Luis Laya at the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Embassy in Canberra, we listened to his report on the election result that, as part of the democratic process, elected President Nicolás Maduro.

The Venezuelan electoral process allows for Venezuelan citizens living abroad to participate in elections which many residents in Australia did attending ballot booths set up for this purpose at the Venezuelan embassy in Canberra.

We heard about the opposition who participated in the electoral process and refused to recognise the results. Some opposition members have been active for many years trying unsuccessfully to reverse the gains of the Bolivarian revolution.

The opposition has been known to be involved in violence with the aim of destroying the revolution. They have become closer and closer to US imperialism. It is well known that the opposition participated in the elections but planned to challenge the election results if victory was not delivered to them.

Venezuela experienced several cyber attacks during its electoral process, aimed at delaying or manipulating the electoral results. Fortunately, the Venezuelan people were organised and took to the streets in defence of their revolution. On Friday 23 August the Venezuelan Supreme Court ratified the election results that proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as the legitimate president of the country.

The CPA understands that US imperialism is the strategic enemy of the Venezuelan people. We also understand that divisions among people on the left have to be amended, based on the principle of no interference, in which only the Venezuelan people have the right to find common grounds in the best interest of the working class and the popular strata.

The CPA thanks HE Luis Laya for welcoming our delegation to the embassy to exchange in a dialogue on how we can improve the solidarity movement in Australia.
