WFTU says "Support Russian farm workers!"
The World Federation of Trade Unions has issued the following statement in support of the national campaign of action being undertaken by workers in Russia's agro-industry sector: Despite difficult conditions and the deplorable state of the national economy, the Trade Union of Workers of the Agro-Industrial Complexes in Russia is persistently fighting to defend the basic rights and interests of the workers in this vital sector of the national economy. Broad masses of workers and trade union committees at all levels are involved in this struggle, as will be shown during the National Day of Action on November 28 when protest actions will take place throughout Russia. Among the main concerns of the workers is the present inadequate support given by the Russian Government to development of the agro-industrial complex in order to end the sector's present devastated conditions, and the need to re-establish the Social Security Fund for this sector of production. They demand a ten percent rise in the national budget for 2000 for this sector, as well as a ban on the sale of agricultural land. They also demand the elimination of the unequal exchange between agricultural and industrial products (which has now become all the more unfavourable due to the increase in the prices of oil and electricity). The World Federation of Trade Unions strongly supports these just demands of the workers of the agro-industrial complex of Russia. The WFTU calls upon all its affiliates and friendly organisations in all countries to express their solidarity with the Central Committee and members of the Trade Union of Workers of the Agro-Industrial Complex of the Russian Federation. Letters of support for these demands may be faxed to Mr V V Putin President of the Russian Federation, Moscow Fax: + 7095 2060501 Mr M M Kasianov Prime Minister, Moscow Fax: + 7095 2054109 Mr G N Seleznev Chairman of State Duma: Fax: + 7095 2923249 Please send copies to: Mr A S Davydov, President, Central Committee of Trade Union of Workers of Agro-Industrial Complex of Russia, Moscow: Fax: + 7095 9388263 or 9306827
