China supports big power declaration

China has supported the recent joint declaration announced by France,
Germany and Russia on the Iraq issue.

Jiang Zemin said China insistently advocates a political solution of the
Iraq issue in the framework of the United Nations.

"The inspection in Iraq is effective and should be continued", said Jiang.
"Warfare is good for no one, and it is our responsibility to take various
measures to avoid war", he said.

"There is still an alternative to war. The use of force could only be a
last resort. Russia, Germany and France are determined to allow every
opportunity for the peaceful disarmament of Iraq", said the declaration.
